July 17. Girls For A Change goes to Ghana.

A diaspora return journey. Documented by KFF. Released on International Day of the Girl.

History calls it the motherland. For these young women, it's about to become something more personal than that. A group of Girls For A Change scholars and leaders are traveling to Ghana for thirteen days in July. The Kodjoe Family Foundation is going with them to document what happens when young Black women return to the continent — not as tourists, but as people with roots there. The trip ends July 29. The story drops October 11.

The Journey

JULY 17 – 29, 2026

Thirteen days. Ghana. A group of young women from Girls For A Change — a program that builds social change leaders out of young Black women — returns to the continent their history runs through.

KFF is documenting this in real time. Not with a highlight reel. With the actual experience: the moments of recognition, the conversations about what's been lost and what's still here, the feeling of standing somewhere your ancestors stood.

Video journals drop during the trip. The full story premieres October 11.

Why This Matters

The diaspora isn't a demographic. It's a network. A network that was deliberately cut and is still being deliberately repaired.

When young Black women go to Ghana, they're not just traveling. They're making the circuit. Closing the loop. Proving that the connection is still there, that it's still alive, and that the next generation is the one doing the work of returning.

This is what FULL CIRCLE means in practice.

What We're Producing

During the trip (July 17 – 29):

Video dispatches from Ghana — raw, real, from the scholars themselves.

Through the summer:

Behind-the-scenes content, scholar reflections, educational context.

October 11 — International Day of the Girl:

Full documentary release. The whole journey, assembled. A gift to the girls, to the continent, and to everyone who followed it.

This campaign lives under FULL CIRCLE — KFF's fourth pillar. The diaspora is a relay. This trip is one baton pass. The girls are the next runners.
