What $1.6 Billion Looks Like When a Diaspora Shows Up

What $1.6 Billion Looks Like When a Diaspora Shows Up

In 2019, Full Circle Africa’s own campaign helped generate a wave of global attention that, according to Boris Kodjoe’s official Milken Institute speaker bio, was “instrumental in helping to contribute $1.6 billion of tourism revenue to the Ghanaian economy.”

That’s not a marketing number. It’s a real, measurable outcome from a single cultural campaign, built on the idea that the diaspora returning home, in person and in attention, is itself an economic force. Ghana’s Year of Return brought the diaspora back to Accra’s streets, markets, and hotels, and the ripple effect moved through an entire national economy.

Boris has carried that proof point into every Milken Institute stage he’s stood on since, from the 2024 Global Conference through the MEA Summit in Abu Dhabi to his current seat as an advisor on the Milken Africa Institute’s Africa Leadership Council. The argument is always the same: cultural influence and economic investment are not separate conversations. When a diaspora shows up, real money moves.

That’s the proof behind FULL CIRCLE’s whole premise: the return isn’t sentimental, it’s structural. Every homecoming, every trip, every act of reconnection carries economic weight the continent can build on, not just a feeling to document.
