Two Weeks In, Two Big Steps
“Great week here. I have started to take some classes, and I already joined the tennis team,” Junior Hakizumwami said in this week’s update. A week after moving into Keiser University and getting centered, Junior has already checked off the two things that define his American chapter: a class schedule and a spot on the roster.
Making the Team
Joining a college tennis program isn’t automatic, and Junior didn’t arrive unprepared. A year of elite training at the Mouratoglou Academy in France, built on the foundation Joseline Umulisa and the Tennis Rwanda Children’s Foundation laid years earlier, made this the natural next step. “We are training and preparing for the match this week,” he said, describing a training block that’s already ramping toward competition.
A Match on the Calendar
This week’s match is the first real competitive marker of Junior’s time in the United States, the next stage of a pipeline that started in Kigali, ran through Biot, and circled back through Rwanda before landing him on a U.S. college roster with a team behind him. “Everything is nice so far, and the atmosphere is great,” Junior said.
What This Means
Two weeks ago, Junior was still learning his way around campus. Now he’s got classes on the calendar and a match to prepare for, exactly the balance of school and sport the Love All Scholarship was built to make possible, at every stage of the pipeline: Kigali, Biot, Rwanda, and now Florida.
